Background?
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen on October 7, 1885.  His father was an eminent physiologist and his mother came from a family with a background in education.  He was taught at the Gammelholm Grammar School in 1903 and after that he entered Copenhagen University and graduated with a Master's degree in Physics in 1909.  He then got his doctor's degree in 1911.  He became curious with properties of metals and his theory on it confronted with the implications of Planck's quantum theory of radiation.

What he discovered?
Bohr revised the model of the atom in 1914. It was earlier suggested that light was given out when atoms were heated and always had a specific amount of energy but none of the scientists were able to explain this.. up until Niels Bohr.  He suggested that the electrons had to be orbiting the nucleus in certain shells, and that energy must be given out when high leveled electrons fall to low leveled electrons.  Bohr introduced the logic of energy levels.

Equipment?
Bohr based his theory on atomic energy levels off of James Jean.  James Jean experimented with radiant energy.  He found that radiant energy could only exist in certain minimum amounts or specific multiples.  Bohr applied that idea to his theory of electrons orbiting atoms.  Bohr compared his thought process of electrons only being able to orbit in certain energy levels to a bicycle.  You can only ride on gears not in between them.

History?
In 1914 the Republic of China entered the Universal Postage Union.  17 Men, woman, and children die in the Ludlow Massacre during a coal-miner's strike in Colorado.  Babe Ruth pitches his first professional game for the minor league Baltimore Orioles at age 19.  And Honduras becomes a signatory to the Buenos Aires copyright treaty.
